Leisure and Sport
Unit
purpose: The
purpose of this unit is to enable students to express their personal
interests around the topic of hobbies, leisure and sport, and to make / respond
to invitations to events / places related to the topic.
3.1.
Expresing preferences, likes and dislikes
Sample productions:
I love/like...
pop music/reading; He/she hates/doesn`t like comics/swimming; Do you like action
films/playing basket-ball?; Yes, I do; No, I don`t; Does he/she like love stories/collecting
stamps?; Yes, he does; No, he/she doesn´t.
3.2.
Inviting and responding to invitations
Sample productions:
Would you like
to dance/go to a party?; Why don`t we go to the amusement park/the movies?;
Let`s play soccer/go for an ica cream; Shall we listen to music/go for a walk?;
(Yes,) I`d love to; That sounds great; That`s a good idea; No, thank you/thanks.
I`d prefer to watch TV/to stay at home.

1.-MEMORY
GAME
Game
to learn new vocabulary.
Function:
Expressing preferences,
likes and dislikes.
Preparation:
Needs no preparation.
Material:
Memory matching game: food and drinks.

Procedure:
- Put
the cards face down.
- Students
turn the cards over trying to match images to words.
- If
they find the match, they keep it. If not, another student tries to.
- The
student who makes more matches wins.

2.-DISGUSTING
ANIMALS
Function:
Expressing preferences
, likes and dislikes.
Preparation:
After seeing: like, don't like, hate, love.and animals and insects vocabulary.
Material:
Plastic animals.

Procedure:
- Show
a plastic animal or insect and express your own preferences.
- Provide
your students with the animals and ask them to say aloud their own preferences.

3.-ERASE
THE WORD
A
good memory game.
Function:
Expressing preferences
, likes and dislikes.
Preparation:
After seeing questions/phrases: like, hate, love.
Procedure:
- Write
a dialogue on the whiteboard and drill it.
- Form
teams.
- Establish turns.
- Each team has to read
the dialogue aloud.
- Before reading the
dialogue for the second time, erase one or two words from it. Note: any
student can open the notebook or write the dialogue
- They have to read the
dialogue as if any word were erased.
- Repeat the procedure
until the full dialogue is erased.
- The team which repeats
the dialogue in the better way wins.

4.-FLY
SWATTERS
Listening
and vocabulary game.
Function:
Expressing preferences,
likes and dislikes.
Preparation:
After
seeing questions/phrases: like, hate, love.
Material:
Plastic fly swatters.
Flash cards: food, sports, etc. (See
IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC
MATERIAL
first grade)
Procedure:
- It could be played
with five students at a time.
- Provide each student
with a fly swatter.
- Put
the cards face up on a table or around the clssroom.
- You
are going to say a word which describes the image of a flash card. You can
also say sentences, questions, phrases, or definitions related to the flash
card, it's up to you.
- Students
have to hit the flash card related to the word, phrase, sentence, question,
etc. that you are mentioning of.
- The
first student who hits the card wins it.
- The
final winner is that one who has collected more cards at the end of the
game.

5.-FOUR
CORNERS
Strategy
for learning vocabulary.
Function:
Expressing preferences, likes and dislikes.
Material:
Cardboards.
Procedure:
- Stick
a cardboard on each corner of the classroom.
- Form
4 teams.
- Write
a heading on each cardboard (sports, kinds of music, types of movies, food).
- Each
team goes to a corner.
- Working
in teams, students have to write sport names, types of music, types of movies,
or food on the cardboard, depending on the corner they are working on
- After
few minutes, teams shift corners and write on the cardboard, depending on
the headline, until they have passed for all the corners.
- At
the end, check written voacabulary and correct mistakes if necessary and
ask students to write it down on their notebooks.

6.-5
THINGS PRESENTATION
Function: Expressing
preferences, likes and dislikes.
Preparation:
After
seeing questions/phrases: like, hate, love.
Material:
5 objects brought to class by each student.
Procedure:
- Each
student passes to the front of the class and showes an object at the same
time that says something about the object (why he likes it, or doesn't).
- A
sentence, at least, has to be said for each object.
- Example:
I like soccer (showing a ball).
- A
lot of things could be included, such as : fruits, vegetables, sport gear,
etc.

7.-TALKING
VOLLEYBALL
Function:
Expressing preferences, likes and dislikes.
Preparation:
After seeing questions/phrases: like, hate, love and vocabulary about sports,
food, movies, and music.
Material:
Balloons.
Procedure:
- Form
teams of 2 or 3 players.
- They
have to pass to the front.
- Draw
a small volley ball court inside the classroom (or outside).
- The
balloom will be the ball.
- It
is played like a volleyball game but, each time a student hits the ball
has to say a sentence, question or phrase expressing a certain preference.
Example: I like basketball, I love pizza, I don't like rock, I hate
romantic movies, etc.

8.-INVITATIONS
Function: Invitations.
Material:
Colored sheets, glue, and sissors.
Procedure:
- Make
a format which could be a basis for a birthday invitation card.
- Write
a text for the invitation on the whiteboard.
- Students
have to elaborate a birthday invitation card which must include their
birth dates, addresses, and time for the party.
- Let
students creativity show up, you will be surprised at the end of the
class.
