UNIT 4

Daily Life

Unit purpose: The purpose of this unit is to enable students to describe actions that happen daily or periodically in their lives or the lives of people and animals they are intersted in.

4.1. Asking and telling the time

Sample productions: What time is it?; What`s the time?; It`s a quarter to three/half past eleven; It`s nine thirty/o`clock.

4.2. Asking for and giving information about everyday activities

Sample productions: I (usually/never) get up/have lunch at five; We (always/sometimes) study/exercise in the afternoon; Does he/she play soccer/swim (on saturday)?; Yes, he/she does; No, he/she doesn`t; What time do you start school/take a shower?; (I start school/take a shower) at seven thirty; How often does he/she go to the movies/go out for lunch?; Twice/three times a week/month; What do they (usually) do at the weekend/on friday?; They (sometimes) visit their grandmother/rent videos; The panda eats bamboo. It`s fron China.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

1.-TIME BINGO

Function: Asking and telling the time.

Material: Time bingo. (See IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC MATERIAL first grade)

Procedure:

Bingo game.
Provide each student with a playing card.
Shuffle cards and mention the time of the given cards.
The student who first completes and shouts "Bingo" wins.

2.-COMPETITION ON CLOCKS

Function: Asking and telling the time.

Preparation: After studying time phrases.

Material: Clocks. (See IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC MATERIAL first grade)

Procedure:

Students have to stand next to the clocks.
Ask some other classmate to say a given time aloud.
Students have to place the clock-hands at the correct time.
The student who does it faster wins.
Try to get everybody involved in the competition.

3.-SWAP SEATS

Function: Asking and giving information about everyday activities.

Preparation: After studying daily routines phrases.

Material: Routines flash verbs.

Procedure:

Place some chairs in a circle. You have to place minus one chair according to the number of students in the game.
Put the flash verbs in the middle of the circle.
Play music. Students have to walk around the chairs.
Turn the music off. Students have to sit on the chairs.
The student who could not be seated has to pick a flash verb and say something related to the verb.
If the sentence is correct, he stays in the game. If not, he is out of it and also a chair is taken out.
The student who stays at the end of the game wins.
The activity can also include adverbs and days of the week.

4.-TALKING VOLLEYBALL

Function: Asking and giving information about everyday activities.

Preparation: After studying daily routines phrases.

Material: Balloon.

Procedure:

Form teams, two or three players in each one.
Draw a small volley ball court inside the classroom (or outside).
The balloom will be the ball.
It is played like a volleyball game but, each time a student hits the ball has to say a sentence, question or phrase: "Say something using always, say something using get up". For instance: "I get up at six", "I always get up at six".
