Unit
purpose: The
purpose of this unit is to enable students to describe the places where
they or other people live, and to ask the way / give directions.
5.1.
Giving simple information about places
Sample productions:
There`s a hotel/a restaurant next to the bank/on Reforma Avenue; You can have
a sandwich in the café/buy a plane ticket at the travel agency.
5.2.
Asking the way and giving directions
Sample productions:
(Excuse me,) Where`s the library/the cinema?; It`s on the corner (of Morelos
and Zapata)/on Roosevelt Street; Where can I find a post office/buy a stamp?;
How can I get to the park/the library; Go along this street/Atlanta Road; Turn
right/left into Hidalgo Avenue; Go past the church/the mall; Is there a telephone/an
Italian restaurant/...around here/near your house?; (Yes,) There`s one/It`s
opposite the pharmacy/next to the subway station; No, there isn`t. (But there`s
one/a Japanese restaurant/...on Lincoln street/in the town centre...).


GAMES
AND ACTIVITIES
1.-PLACES
AND BUILDINGS BINGO
Function:
Giving simple
information about places.
Material:
Places bingo. (See IDEAS
FOR DIDACTIC
MATERIAL
first grade)
Procedure:
- Bingo game.
- Provide each student
with a playing card.
- Shuffle cards and mention
the place of the given cards.
- The student who first
completes and shouts "Bingo" wins.

2.-PREPOSITIONS
BASKET BALL
Function:
Giving simple
information about places.
Preparation:
After studying prepositions of place: Next to, between, in front of, to the
left of, to the right of, etc.
Material:
Mini basket and tiny ball that could be found at a toy store. (See IDEAS
FOR DIDACTIC
MATERIAL first grade)
Procedure:
- Place
the basket in front of the group.
- Give
a student the ball .
- The
student has to throw the ball (like a basket ball free throw). If he/she
makes the basket at the first time, he/she wins a point. If not, he/she
has to say where the ball ended.
- The
sample production is as following: The ball is between Griselda and Arturo.
The ball is in front of Ricardo. The ball is next to Ana. etc.
- After
saying where the ball is, the rest of the class has to write it down as
a feedback.
- Repeat
the activity as many times as possible.

3.-HEAD
FIGURES
Function:
Giving simple
information about places.
Preparation:
After studying prepositions of place: Next to, between, in front of, to the
left of, to the right of, etc.
Material:
Two different colored head figures.
Procedure:
- Provide
students with the head figures.
- Say
aloud: "The red head is in front of the blue one". "The blue
one is next to the red one". "The blue head is behind the red
one".
- Students
have to place the figures as you said.
- This
is a good activity for students who like to manipulate things: Spatial and
kinesthesic learning styles are encouraged.

4.-PICTURE
DICTATION
Function:
Giving simple
information about places.
Preparation:
After studying prepositions of place: Next to, between, in front of, to the
left of, to the right of, etc. and vocabulary of places.
Procedure:
- This
is a dictation of images instead of words. You will say sentences and students
have to draw what you are saying.
- Start
with easy and short phrases such as: "The church is next to the park",
or
"The school is in front of the gas station".
- In
order to increase the level, include many places in the same picture, like
a small city.

5.-MAQUETTE
Function:
Asking
the way and giving directions and giving
simple information about places.
Preparation:
After studying directions: Go straight, turn left, turn right, etc.
Material:
Maquette city and a remote controlled car. (See IDEAS

Procedure:
- Put
the toy car in the small city.
- Provide
a student with the remote commander and ask another student to give him
directions on how to get to a certain place of the city. Example: "Go
for 5 blocks". "Go ahead 2 blocks and turn right".
- It
can also be done by putting buildings in the city. Example: "The bank
is in front of the bakery". Also by placing people on the streets:
"Peter is across from the bank". Or looking for places: "The
gas station is on the corner of Juarez Avenue and Reforma street".

6.-MAP
ON THE FLOOR
Function:
Asking
the way and giving directions and giving
simple information about places.
Preparation:
After studying prepositions of place: Next to, between, in front of, to the
left of, to the right of, etc.
Material:
Small boxes. (See IDEAS

MATERIAL
first grade)
Procedure:
- Draw
squares on the floor (or taped).
- The
squares will be a small city. Give each street a name.
- Provide
your students with the boxes.
- SAy
where the boxes (representing buildings should be placed), Example: "The
school is between the church and the restaurant". "The hotel is
next to the drugstore". "The market is on Aldama street and Hidalgo
street".
- They
have to put the boxes according to the instructions.
- The
goal is to put the boxes/buildings on the squares.

7.-HIDE
AND SEEK
Function:
Asking
the way and giving directions.
Preparation:
After studying directions: Go straight, turn left, turn right, etc.
Material:
A tiny object (a ball or a doll)
Procedure:
- Ask
a student to leave the classroom.
- Hide
the small object in the classroom.
- The
student comes in.
- His
partners have to guide him to the object. Example: Walk straight, three
steps, turn right, etc.
- The
goal of the game is to find the object with the directions given by the
classmates.
- In
fact, it could be a competition on teams.

PICTURES
Function: Giving
simple information about places.
Preparation:
After studying: flower, houses, trees, bird.
Material:
16 pictures worksheet

Procedure:
- Provide each student
with a worksheet.
- Students have to
choose one of the 16 pictures available and describe it as following:
- 1)There is a _____________
in the picture. Example: "There is a bird in the picture".
- 2)There are _____________s
(and ____________s) in the picture. Example: "There are
trees and houses in the picture".
- 3)There isn't any
______________ in the picture. There is no ________.
- 4)There aren't any
______________s in the picture. There are no ________s.
- A student should
pass to the front and read the sentences without saying which picture
he refers to.
- The rest of the class
should listen to the description and guess which picture he is talking
about.
- The student who guesses
wins, passes to the front and reads his description.
- It also could be
done with sentences:
- 1)Is there. a ___________?
- 2)Are there ____________s?
- 3)Yes, there is.
Yes, there are.
- 3)No, there isn't.
No, there are not.
- A student passes
to the front.
- His classmates have
to ask questions about the picture he chose to and answer "yes"
or "no".

9.-SMASHING
A PLACE OF THE CITY
Function: Giving
simple information about places.
Preparation:
After studying: Definitions of places in the city, example: "It's the
place where you buy gasoline", It's the place where you buy books",
etc.
Procedure:
- Write the names
of places of the city on the whiteboard. Example: library, hospital,
market, etc.
- Two students pass
to the front.
- You have to say
a definition,"It's the place where you buy medicines".
- The first student
who places his hand on the correct word of the whiteboard, wins.
- Then, that word
has to be erased.
