FIRST GRADE

UNIT 1

Personal Identification

Unit purpose: The purpose of this unit is to enable students to introduce themselves and others, and to exchange personal details.

1.1. Introducing oneself and other people

Sample productions: I`m Daniel; He/this is Tony; She/that is Paula; My/her name is Johana; He`s an accountant/a taxi driver; She`s a doctor/an atlethe; He/she`s 20/13... (years old); I`m from Mexico/England; He/she`s Canadian/chinese.

1.2. Asking for and giving personal details

Sample productions: What`s your/his name?; (My/His name is) Ana/Samuel; What`s your last name?; (My last name/ It is) Garcia; How old are you?; (I`m) 12/14 (years old); Where are they from?; (They`re from) Brazil/the United States; They`re Brazilian/American; What`s your telephone number/e-mail address?; (My telephone number/It is) 11128904; (My e-mail address is) secondary_kid@redescolar.org.mx; What`s your occupation?; What do you do?; I`m a student/an engineer.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

1.-WHAT`S YOUR NAME? (FUNNY VOICES)

Funny ice-breaker in first lessons.

Function: Introducing oneself.

Preparation: Just ask: "What's your name?"

Material: A handkerchief .

Procedure:

  • Choose a student to stand in front of the class.
  • Put the handkerchief on his/her eyes.
  • The student wearing the handkerchief on has to ask the question " What's your name?". Another partner has to answer "my name is..." but imitating a funny voice and saying any name.
  • The student wearing the handkerchief on has to guess who is the person that answered the question. If he/she guesses, can go to his/her seat. If not, he/she stays there until he/she guesses the real identity of the funny voice.

2.-PERSONAL INFORMATION BINGO

Function: Asking and giving personal information.

Material: Personal information bingo. (See IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC MATERIAL first grade)

Procedure:

  • Bingo game.
  • Provide each student with playing card.
  • Shuffle cards and mention the phrases and/or questions.
  • The student who first completes and shouts "Bingo" wins.

3.-TIC TAC TOE

Function: Asking and giving personal information.

Procedure:

  • Draw tic tac toe charts on the whiteboard.
  • Form teams (suggested 6 or 4).
  • Draw a chart for each two teams.
  • Write a word in each space of the chart (name, address, telephone, american, etc.)
  • Two teams play on one chart. Give turns to participate.
  • If a team want to write its cross or doughnut on a space, they must say a phrase, question, or sentence mentioning the word written in that space.

4.-PROFESSIONS BINGO

Function: Professions and occupations.

Material: Professions bingo. (See IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC MATERIAL first grade)

Procedure:

  • Bingo game.
  • Provide each student with playing card.
  • Shuffle cards and mention the professions and occupations.
  • The student who first completes and shouts "Bingo" wins.

5.-ERASE THE WORD

Game for practicing pronunciation and memorization.

Function: Asking and giving personal information.

Preparation: After practicing dialogues.

Procedure:

  • Write a dialogue on the whiteboard and make some drillings.
  • Form teams.
  • Give turns.
  • Each team has to read the dialogue aloud.
  • Before the teams read the dialogue for the second time, erase a word or two. Be careful that anyone copied it on his/her notebook.
  • The teams have to read the dialogue as if any words were erased.
  • Repeat the procedure until the whole dialogue has been erased.
  • The team which can say the whole dialogue, wins the competition.

6.-MAKING SENTENCES

Game to motivate the creative use of language.

Function: Asking and giving personal information.

Preparation: Practice questions and answers.

Procedure:

  • Form teams.
  • Write on the whiteboard as many words you can that can be used in questions and answers in a jumbled manner (be careful to balance the parts of the speech).
  • Establish the time and turns to participate.
  • Each team has to assemble a sentence, question, or phrase using the words written on the whiteboard and say it aloud.
  • Words that were used must be erased.
  • The team which forms more sentences, questions or phrases wins.

7.-AUCTION

Grammar feedback game.

Function: Asking and giving personal information.

Preparation: Write 20 sentences, questions or phrases. You must include some grammatical mistakes in some sentences (not in more than 5 sentences).

Material: Toy money.

Procedure:

  • Form teams of 5 or 6 students.
  • Provide them with the same amount of toy money.
  • Teach your students how to bid money: We bid $400, we bid $500, etc.
  • Write or say aloud a sentence.
  • It is an auction, students have to bid money to buy that sentence.
  • They have to try to buy only correct sentences, those ones without any grammatical mistake.
  • You have to sell it at the highest price as possible.
  • After selling the sentence, you have to say if it is correct or incorrect and why
  • The team which buys more correct sentences wins (not the one with more money left).

8.-INTRODUCING PEOPLE

Function: Introducing people.

Preparation: After study "he is, she is, this is, countries, nationalities, professions"

Material: Visuals of people. (See IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC MATERIAL first grade)

Procedure:

  • Show a visual of a person (it works better with famous people).
  • Point at the visual and say "this is Ronaldinho"
  • Then "he is from Brazil"
  • After that "he is Brazilian"
  • Next "he is a professional soccer player"
  • And then "he is 24 years old"
  • Focus the pronnunciation on "he, she, this", thus students will notice genre and number.
  • Repeat the same exercise with the visual of a woman.
  • Sometimes is good to dictate the sentences and this way students could follow a model.
  • Provide your students with visuals.
  • If people on visuals are not famous, you can write their personal information on the back face.
  • Your students have to introduce the person of the visual.
  • When they have introduced the person of the visual, then they can introduce a partner to the class.

9.-BOARD GAME

Function: Introducing people, classroom language, numbers, alphabet.

Material: Board game. Dice with the numbers 1 and 2. (See IDEAS FOR DIDACTIC MATERIAL first grade)

Procedure:

  • Form teams.
  • Give turns.
  • Each team trows throw the dice and move the numbers of spaces according to the dice.
  • Students have to answer the questions of the board game to move forward.
  • The team which gets the "finish" space wins.

10.-PLAYING PROFESSIONS

professions role play.

Function: Professions and occupations.

Material: You are going to need toys which imitate workers tools. You can find them on a toy store, such as doctor, carpenter, plumber, mechanic, engineer, etc.

Procedure:

  • Provide your students with a set of tools.
  • They will be interview by the group.
  • It can be start with questions like:"What's your occupation/profession? What do you do? Where do you work?.
  • Besides answering the interview they can show the tools and say what they are for.
